Prayer

I’ve seen some for whom prayer is the source of everything good in their life. I know others for whom the idea of prayer is repugnant.

I have travelled through the wastelands of america with barely a dollar to put in the tank of my old truck.

I have found myself on many adventures with every reson in the world for it to be my last day on earth but it never was.

That is because I know how to look to god. I know how to look to the sky. I know how to ask the universe for the best thing to happen.

I was in Florida for a time and my air conditioner was not working.

It was winter. and so I rolled around Florida with the Window down taking in the perfect air. But I knew that by summer if I did not have the air conditioner working, I would be in trouble. I would not even be able to sit in the truck. My road bound life would not even be possible.

Every shop in the small isolated town where I lived quoted me the same price for the fix.

“You need a compressor,” they all said like a chorus line. “$600 bucks minimum”. They said it in every shop in town.

I tried everything.

I ordered a new compressor clutch on amazon for 45$ but I could not muster what it took to replace it.

Still the ac would not engage, and I worried about the summer. But 600 dollars was not on the table.

Work called and I drove the truck out to Texas to put houses together.

All across the south in the month of February the air was like floral butter. Aromatic. Dewy. Euphoric. Enlivened. Germinal. Pullulating.

But the summer loomed. Massive clouds came off the gulf. the mountains of the south. Weather behemoths.

In Tyler Texas I rolled into a car shop and told the man about my air conditioner.

“give it to me I’ll look at it,” he said. So I waited on the chair there.

30 minutes later he came in and said, “It was a dirty connection. No amperage to the clutch magnet.” I cleaned it off. It works now. Just give me 20 bucks.”

Was it prayer?

What steered me away from those cheats and liars in Florida? What told me to head down the road? what voice told me to move on to other pastures?

I had six different opinions. All the same. What did it for me? What got me out to Texas.

Was it the big skies of the South? Is that what had me looking up?
